BRODIE and the BUZKILLS

Brodie and the Buzzkills exist in the twilight at a rural crossroads where country, blues, alternative and classic rock intersect. The Buzzkills bring the grit and humour and Brodie brings the feelings and the power to what is surely one of the finest new bands emerging out of WA.

GOOD NEWS NOW WE CAN EAT ALL THE VAMPIRES

Originally debuted in 2020 as the alt-moniker of Paul Francis Wood (Red Jezebel/The Ghost Hotel) as a vehicle to showcase his musical growth and evolution that he had finely tuned over the last several decades, taking the lessons and learnings from his long-winding journey and applying it into a project where he takes centre stage. Now in 2023, GOOD NEWS NOW WE CAN EAT ALL THE VAMPIRES has expanded into a full lineup of some of WA’s most recognisable musicians, emphasising the potent songwriting that's stayed central to PFW’s portfolio of work for the past 25 years.

LITTLE GUILT
Originating from Mandurah, a coastal town an hour south of Perth, Little Guilt is Ella Melton, Joe Knowles, Lachlan Thomson, Brady Keirnan and Jarrod Rumble. Beginning in early 2021, they draw inspiration from artists such as Angus and Julia stone, Middle Kids, Ball Park Music and Men I Trust. Their sound is awash with the familiarity of suburbia - creating a foundation of observational lyricism that zooms in on the vignettes of the everyday. They remind us of the tenderness of existence and make us feel inextricably bound to the human experience through gentle and carefree music.

SURPRISE CHEF
Surprise Chef’s music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet’s distinct sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip hop.   Hailing from just outside of Melbourne, Australia, their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings amassed a die-hard fanbase and brought their sound from their home studio to every corner of the globe. The band is now signed to Big Crown Records, joining a lineage of contemporary and classic sounds that have influenced Surprise Chef’s music since their formation in 2017.

ANESU

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Perth, Anesu is a transgender hip-hop artist who draws influences from both worlds. Performing with a live band, Anesu uses staunch storytelling to explore themes of queer and cultural identity. Their music can be described as both activism and impeccably crafted R&B. Through biting melodies and catchy hooks, Anesu fearlessly addresses issues of racism and grief while celebrating the boundless joy of the Black experience.

CLAUDIE JOY AND THE JOY BOYS

Claudie Joy & the Joy Boys is the musical project behind Boorloo (Perth) based artist Claudia Tero. They describe themselves as an obscure musical mess, a swelling of feeling, tender and raw. The emerging seven piece have sold out shows across WA and have solidified themselves as one of Perth's most exciting up and coming talents. Taking inspiration from the storytellers she adores, such as Haley Heynderickx and Adrianne Lenker, Claudie brings together the crunchiest parts of indie rock and folk into the delightful mess of sincerity, honesty and obscurity that has seen her charm audiences all over Perth and beyond.

DAN HOWLS BAND

Unapologetically raw and hearty, Dan Howls is the true embodiment of catchy big blues. Hailings from the shores of Fremantle, Waylalup the blues rock outfit of friends has set themselves apart as an irreplaceable Australian live band, beloved by all for their big riffs and bigger voices. The band that once originated as a solo act that began one day as a backpacker in Cambodia, took flight back in Boorloo/Perth in 2016 with the addition of Julia Weller, Calum Adcock & Josh ‘Cutty’ Cutler.

Hyped and home after completing recording for Tracing Faces at the end of 2019, Great Gable held onto the high of the making of their first record and immediately jumped into writing new material. What emerged is a record brimming with youthful exuberance balanced by a confidence that comes with experience, a new level of sophistication not at the expense of f.u.n. - it’s Great Gable’s propulsively rhythmic, evocative guitar-driven rock’n’roll enriched with experience.

Their shared love for the ocean, forest and mountains can be felt in their music, and makes for the perfect soundtrack to summer road trips and warm nights around the campfire with friends.

With a voice that sings with power, capitation and complexity, Travis Green is a vocalist to be reckoned with. Drawing alikeness to Jeff Buckley and Allen Stone in the force of his whaling to his heart wrenching emotional vibrato, Green’s singing is in a league of its own. The magnetic frontman and wildly talented songwriter’s live show is one of captivating big energy, big voices and big heart.
